Buying a Home
Step 1: Clearly identify what you are looking for in a home.
Sorting through thousands of house listings can be a daunting task if you don’t have something specific in mind. A similar experience might be going to the library just to browse books without a particular subject or author in mind – chances are you leave frustrated and without a book! The same principal applies to searching for a new home – the better you identify what you are looking for the easier it becomes to find.
Some important aspects of deciding what homes to consider are:
- How big of a house do we really need? Home buyers should take a realistic look at what type of living space, bedrooms, etc they need for their particular situation. And while everyone usually wants the biggest home they can afford - taking on the expense of a bigger home than you really need may cause undue financial stress for a family.
- What amenities are “must-haves” and which are “nice-to-haves”? Each family has different needs for their homes. Identifying things like a bigger yard, close access to school or shopping, or maybe a water front lot will help narrow your search. However finding just the right home with every option you would like may be tough so knowing which items are less important will help.
- What is my time frame? Not every home is available to move into immediately. Some homes are priced for quick sale while others may not be available for several months. If you have a flexible time frame that may also allow you to consider building a custom home designed to fit your needs.
